What is web accessibility?

Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web. Creating a site that is more usable for those with disabilities often has the added benefit of making the site better for other users and web search engines.

Why is web accessibility important?

  • There are more people with disabilities using technology and visiting your website than you think.
  • Building an accessible site creates a better experience for all visitors.
  • Accessibility improves search engine rankings.
  • It's the law (Universities can - and have been - sued for insufficient accessibility to content on their websites).
  • It's the right thing to do.

Accessibility Questions

There are four questions that can provide a guide in making a website more accessible.

  • Do the images within the page require alternative text?
  • Do links on the page contain descriptive, meaningful text?
  • Does the page content use semantic markup?
  • Are tables built in a manner that makes them more accessible?
